On Penal Substitution - Parts 1 and 2
Today’s episode of the podcast is Part 2 of a series on Atonement. In the first episode, I explored the doctrine of Penal Substitution, its development in the West, and why it takes so prominent a place in Protestantism. I, then, contrast the doctrine with the understanding of the cross of Christ in the Eastern Church fathers. In today’s episode, I delve into ways in which the language of Penal Substituion is often wrongly projected on biblical and patristic literature, explore the connection between the early Christian understanding of the cross and the embrace of martyrdom, and then offer a philosophy assessment of the theory of Penal Substition.

I'd like to hear your thoughts (or read them) on Holy Tradition and the epistemic verities concomitant with Holy Tradition. In other words, for Eastern Orthodox, it seems Holy Tradition serves as a type of epistemic foundation for safeguarding orthodox teaching. I'm wondering about the scope and limits of Holy Tradition. For example, is there an epistemic infinite regress (EIR) latent within it? How might an Eastern Orthodox person escape the apparent problem of the EIR? Reformed Epistemology seeks to eliminate this via 'properly basic' beliefs, and I'm curious as to your thoughts on the matter.
